2009/09/18 Day 6

Today's program: FIELD TRIP to Kisen Wai-Wai Village

- Make your own bamboo chopsticks with a knife.
- Nature Bingo; A game to look for something in nature that fits various descriptions.
- Make your own supper using wood stove to experience a life of old days.
- Evening lecture: How they teach kids about environment and nature.

Situated in a mountainous area, this place re-creates a village of old Japan, about 60 to 100 years ago. Most buildings are made of wood and straw. We have to use wood stove to cook, and we have to burn firewood to make hot bath. Lots of insects, frogs, snakes, fish and other animals inhabit in and around the area.

Students really enjoyed the life in the countryside.

After the evening lecture, around midnight, students sit together and talked for hours about their feelings and problems they have, and exchanged their thoughts on how they should be at this stage of this camp. After many hours of input, they are feeling the need of output. I can hear the change of shifting gear.

I never thought that living there will be easy. It was very difficult, from the cooking, to heating, to all the bugs there...but it was a very inspiring and memorable experience, because i had the chance to try a different culture, and how they lived. One thing that was also memorable was the time when we all gathered together and gave reflections for the past things that happened and to what is about to come. It was a great opportunity to hear evryone's opinions and reflections.

  2. I felt like as if I was back in about 60 to 100 years ago in the village. The things I realized are how much do I rely on technology and time goes by very slowly in the village. it's so relaxing that I was lazying around on "engawa" after the meal.

  3. AS this time could not get the chance,I want to spend more time there and try to expore the hidden beauty of the nature.Inspite of short of time I did my best in my own way.
Making Hashi by ourself, cooking dinner in old style--these are the great experiance. But I want to know from others that what they think about this programm at Wai Wai village?
The evening lecture by the authorites cleared some cloud about the program there.
BUt the best part was the reflection time where we shared opinions---I am stunned after hearing some opyimistic comments.

  4. having experience the old japanese style of living was good.
but what i think is the best is the reflection time we had at night. that was the first time to talk with all of us. we all spoke up the feelings or anything we thought. it was good time to hear and the time gave me much idea.
i think reflection time is the most impportant thing to have in this study camp.
i think everybody has been changing the way they are.
